Bar ohne Namen

High-Performance Aluminium by Novelis

Novelis, a leading provider of flat-rolled aluminium products and the world's largest recycler of aluminium, is focusing on the latest advancements in the production of high-recycled-content aluminium alloys and initiatives to establish a closed-loop material cycle at this year's ALUMINIUM trade fair.

As a key supplier of rolled aluminium sheets and plates used in critical components like fuselage and wing structures, Novelis plays a pivotal role in the aerospace industry. By focusing on the development of high-strength, lightweight aluminium alloys, Novelis significantly contributes to improvements in fuel efficiency and the reduction of operational costs. With aerospace production facilities in Germany and China, Novelis boasts highly specialised, state-of-the-art manufacturing plants and robust research and development teams to meet stringent industry standards and drive innovation. Novelis' commitment to sustainability is reflected in the recyclability of its aluminium products, aligning with the environmental goals of the aerospace industry.

Innovative Fuselage Demonstrator Sets New Standards for Airbus A320

In collaboration with Airbus, a fuselage demonstrator was constructed as part of the "Aton" project, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. This demonstrator utilised a new cladding and innovative joining technique. The sheets used were manufactured by Novelis in Koblenz and supplied to Airbus Aerostructures Nordenham for the construction of a fuselage section of the serial aircraft A320. This component was unveiled for the first time in June this year. It is a newly developed sheet product realised through the collaboration of the research and development department in partnership with Airbus and other project partners.

"Innovation for the international aerospace industry is always a collaborative effort involving many partners and requires resilience and well-coordinated teams. Highly professional, cross-functional working groups from respective research and development teams in the industry work to make the aviation of tomorrow more innovative, sustainable, and secure," states Dr. Sabine Spangel, Head of R&D Novelis Koblenz.

Traditional fuselage sheets require a cladding of pure aluminium to protect against corrosion, resulting in a soft and vulnerable surface. The new product is not only more robust against damage but also enables friction stir welding without extensive preparation. This replacement of rivet joints leads to significant weight savings and higher processing speeds. Additionally, the new sheet product is highly recyclable.

"We are proud to have developed this special fuselage demonstrator with our long-standing partner Airbus, which not only positively impacts the manufacturing process but also meets our sustainability requirements and those of our customers," says Andreas Delis, Director, Sales & Marketing, Aerospace and Industrial Plate, Novelis Europe.
