German Aluminium Alliance: For a Competitive and Climate-Neutral Future
Bar ohne Namen
On 8 October, during the ALUMINIUM 2024 trade fair in Düsseldorf, the German Aluminium Alliance was officially launched with the signing of a joint declaration. The Alliance reaffirms the commitment of its members to establish a climate-neutral and competitive aluminium industry in Germany. The initiative is supported by the economic ministries of the states of Nordrhein-Westfalen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Sachsen-Anhalt, Saarland, as well as the Hamburg Ministry of Economic Affairs, IG Metall, IGBCE, and the Association Aluminium Deutschland.
Aluminium is not only an essential material for numerous industries, including transport, construction, and electrical engineering, but also plays a key role in the energy transition and the implementation of net-zero technologies. With over 62,000 employees and an annual turnover of more than €24 billion, the aluminium sector is a significant employer and a crucial part of the German economy.

Shared Goals for a Sustainable Industry
The Alliance has set four key goals to ensure a sustainable future for the industry. Foremost is the goal of achieving climate-neutral aluminium production in Germany. This will be accomplished through the development of innovative technologies aimed at reducing CO2 emissions and establishing a climate-neutral value chain. At the same time, the partners are committed to safeguarding the industry's competitiveness by creating fair conditions at both the national and international levels. Another priority is promoting the circular economy, with a focus on conserving resources and reducing environmental impact. Social responsibility is also a major focus, with an emphasis on ensuring good working conditions and strong employee representation.
Clear Demands and Framework Conditions
The German Aluminium Alliance calls on policymakers to provide clear framework conditions that will support the transformation of the industry towards climate-neutral production. Key demands include a stable and affordable energy supply and increased investment in research and development to drive the decarbonisation of aluminium production. Additionally, creating a fair international competitive environment is crucial to prevent competitive distortions and the relocation of companies abroad.
The establishment of the German Aluminium Alliance marks an important step towards shaping a sustainable and competitive future for Germany's aluminium industry.
